A Study of Dexamethasone Suppression Test in Psychiatric Patients with Depressed Mood

Abstract
This dexamethasone suppression test was performed on 36 inpatients in Wonju Christian Hospital, who were in depressed mood, regardless of psychiatric diagnosis. Correlation between DST results and individual symptoms of depression which were listed in the DSM-¥² diagnostic criteria of major depression, was studied. DST results were based on two criteria which were Carroll¢¥s (post-DST cortisol level above 5 §Á/§£) and Bernstein¢¥s(cortisol suppression index below 4).
The results of this study were as follows:
1. Nonsuppressors were 9(25%) by Carroll¢¥s criteria, 16(44.4%) by cortisol suppression index. Each criteria was statistically correlated (p=0.0005).
2. The relationship between DST results and diagnostic groups, was not statistically correlated.
3. DST results were not correlated with each depression symptom which were listed in DSM-¥² diagnostic criteria of major depression.
4. The compared changes of DST results between admission day and 2 weeks later, with each symptoms of depression, did not result in any specific finding upon analysis.
5. DST results were not correlated with those who had a symptom of disorientation, delusion or hallucination.
